Chlorine background

Some claim that chlorine was occasionally discovered in 1774 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in one of his experiments with hydrochloric acid and manganese dioxide; others assert that this element was discovered by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1808. Chlorine had its bactericidal properties demonstrated under laboratory conditions by bacteriologist Koch in 1881. It is one of those chemical elements with major industrial importance, due to its wide use in several segments. Chlorine is used as a disinfectant to destroy pathogenic microorganisms.
The product first used for disinfection was chlorine gas, which needs to be conditioned under high pressure in steel cylinders and, therefore, offers great risk during use. Then, sodium hypochlorite, which is obtained with a maximum concentration around 12% chlorine, besides being instable in storage, became an option. Then, powder calcium hypochlorite appeared, but with considerable insoluble content. Beating all the others, stabilized chlorine arrived to meet all the needs, without any by-products, the so-called trihalomethanes, considered carcinogenic.

Certain diseases are transmitted by contact with contaminated water, including: schistosomiasis, otitis, scabies, and ringworm. Others are transmitted by ingestion of contaminated water: leptospirosis, typhoid, dysentery, hepatitis. And there are also those diseases that are transmitted by insects that develop in water, among others: yellow fever, dengue, malaria, cholera. Therefore, water treatment is not only for vanity, but to prevent diseases and boost health.

Non-stabilized chlorine compounds are strongly oxidizing and react rapidly with organic matter, being impaired in the presence of the sun rays, which causes a rapid loss of the disinfecting action. On the other hand, Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate, which is a stabilized chlorinated compound, reacts slowly with organic matter due to its stable chemical structure. This causes the chlorine disinfection power to be preserved in the water.
